| Portfolio / Gouache Paintings / Animals |
Gianna's collection of animal paintings were inspired from her travels across the globe as well as by her backyard buddies that have always been a part of her life, from birds, chickens, rabbits and ducks as a child, to her current "farm" of three dogs, two horses, a cat and a tarantula who hitched a ride in her art van while traveling through Arizona.
As you will notice in almost all of her paintings, there is a distinct personality in each of the animals, especially in the eyes. " I always paint the eyes last. It makes the character come alive. Besides, I don't think I could concentrate on painting the rest of the animals if it were watching me!" |

Gianna first began sketching plants as a child, mostly during trips abroad with her family. After high school, she worked as an assistant designer painting "those wrap-around floral decals on dinner plates." She has since moved away from " commercial" work and now focuses on the plant.
" I love to paint florals. Not only because they are beautiful to study, but the more I look at a plant and study it, the more I learn about transparency, light, the flow of leaves and stems and form. I no longer try to capture each scientific detail, but instead I try to convey feeling and form of the plant. Is it strong? Is it fragrant? Are the petals soft or textured? Will they fall off if you touch them? A lot can be "said" with composition and color." |
